Minimally invasive video assisted Thyroidectomy

Minimally invasive video assisted thyroidectomy is a procedure developed in Italy by Prof. Paolo Miccoli. The procedure was developed in the late 90s and become popular in the 21st century.

It uses conventional instrumentation available in any modern operating theatre that has the capability to perform video assisted procedures. It is therefore cheap and easy to implement in any hospital without a major expense in technology or increasing patient's fees.

MIVAT is perfomed via a 2cm incision in the neck, which once healed allows for an excellent cosmetic outcome. Unfortunately given the small size of the incision not all thyroid pathology can be operated using a MIVAT approach. Dr. Oddone-Baridon is the pioneer in this procedure in Sydney. Having learned from Paolo Miccoli himself in Pisa.
