The importance of regular skin checks
The importance of regular skin checks is always highlighted by Dr. Nicolas Oddone Baridon during his consultations. This is probably the most important recommendation given to our surgical oncology patients during their visits. The key element of treating any skin cancer is prevention, prevention, prevention and if this fails, the next line of defense is early treatment. That is why yearly checks are recommended for everyone who lives in Australia. If you have had skin cancer you should be looking at having checks every 6 months.
The main types of skin cancer you can be affected by are melanoma and non melanoma skin cancer. Our spanish speaking patients can read in spanish here http://www.thehispanoamericannewspaper.com/portal-medico.ws
Melanoma is when a group of pigmented cells, called melanocytes agressively grow and invade deeper layers. This type of cancer can be fatal and it is very aggressive. It has to be treated early. Non melanoma skin cancers, represented by the most common types Squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and Basal cell carcinoma(BCC) are less agressive and are usually cured by surgery.
